Brownie Behaviors and Group Dynamics
Creating the kind of environment in which Girl Scouts are unafraid to try new things and to be who they want to be starts with the troop leader. By meeting your troop members where they are, you’ll help them develop the leadership skills they’ll use today and in the future.
As Girl Scouts grow, you’ll experience different joys and challenges with each level. Here are some guidelines for meeting Girl Scout Brownies’ (Grades 2-3) needs and abilities.
Energy Levels and Sociability
Kids at the Brownie age level have lots of energy and need to run, walk and play outside. They are social and enjoy working in groups, so help them team up in small or large groups for projects and activities. Brownies also love to act in plays, create music and dance—your troop may want to create their own play or even tell a story through dance or creative movement.
Fine Motor Skills
Brownie Girl Scouts are continuing to develop their fine motor skills and can tie shoes, use basic tools and even begin to sew. They may need some assistance using scissors or threading needles, but you can encourage them to express themselves and their creativity by making things with their hands.
Reading, Writing and Understanding
Brownies are just beginning to write and spell, so activities that include drawing and role playing can be more meaningful for them. They are becoming more comfortable with basic number concepts like time, money and distance. For reading, writing, and numbers, offer support only when needed.
Following Directions
Brownies know how to follow rules, listen well and appreciate the recognition of a job well done. Try keeping a similar structure from meeting-to-meeting and when giving instructions, offer one direction at a time. Be sure to acknowledge when they have listened or followed directions well as this will increase their motivation for listening and following rules next time.
Leadership
Girl Scouts at the Brownie age level want to help others and appreciate being given individual responsibilities for a task—cleaning up, passing out snack or leading a song. Let your Brownies lead by letting them help pick and brainstorm activities whenever possible.
