Campers in this session will level up their trip skills by spending eight days backpacking through Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore. Youth will spend the first days at Camp Northwoods preparing for their trip, then travel by van to Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan (about four hours away). Once there, backpackers will set off for eight days of hiking and camping along the shore of Lake Superior. Each day campers will pack up and hike to a different site to camp for the night. Campers in this session will refine their hiking, outdoor cooking, and leadership skills while enjoying the dramatic cliffs, sandy beaches, and deep forests of the Northwoods. After completing their backpacking trip, campers will return to Camp Northwoods to clean up and celebrate.

Prerequisites: Previous backpacking experience is recommended. Campers should be prepared to hike 3-10 miles per day on challenging terrain including rocky trails and steep hills while carrying a backpack weighing 30-40 pounds. Campers should also be aware that much of the trail goes along the top of cliffs above Lake Superior - those who are very afraid of heights might want to consider a different session. Participants need to bring their own hiking boots with ankle support.

Since longer trip programs can be challenging, campers will be asked to fill out a pre-camp survey about their experience level when registering for six-day or longer trips. This helps make the experience safer and more enjoyable for all campers.

Cadettes will earn their Trail Adventure and Primitive Camper badges; Seniors will earn the Adventure Camper and Trail Adventure badges (included).

Bus transportation to and from camp is included in the cost of registration. We provide a bus to Camp Northwoods with stops in Eagan and at Camp Lakamaga. Details can be found on the Bus to Northwoods page.
