For the past three summers, Girl Scouts River Valleys—in partnership with Dunwoody College of Technology and other community supporters—has provided unique experiences for girls to explore STEM. Whether a week-long camp or a day-long workshop, girls practiced problem solving, experimented with technology, developed leadership, and took positive risks by discovering new things—like woodworking, welding, sustainable design, and renewable energy. Led by female Dunwoody instructors, girls explored a range of educational and career options, all in a supportive, girl-centered environment.
For the first time last summer, Girl Scouts River Valleys offered Power Girls, a one-of-a-kind, six-day camp. While we know the demand for female-led trades programming is high among our Girl Scouts, even we were surprised at how quickly the camp filled! Throughout the successful six-day camp, 80 girls became construction leaders, learned how to use new tools, and put their skills to the test as they built the exterior of two tiny homes. When they weren’t building the tiny homes, girls enjoyed the outdoors and boosted their confidence through boating, archery, and outdoor survival programming.
To build on the success of last year, Girl Scouts River Valleys will again offer Power Girls—a six-day trades-based camp experience—Sunday, June 16 to Friday, June 21, 2019. The focus of the camp will be to finish the interior of these two tiny homes and build the exterior of one tiny home, allowing girls to round out their construction skills.
Become a Sponsor
We invite you to support Power Girls in 2019 and make this one-of-a-kind camp possible for girls. Together, we can help girls learn to lead with confidence, develop a broader sense of their capacities and capabilities, expand their math and science skills through concrete applications, and push past perceived limitations. Together, we can build strong girls ready for success.
