Power Girls Electrical Certificate powered by IBEW/NECA
Energize your career opportunities with Power Girls! Girl Scouts in grades 6-12 are invited to earn a special Power Girls Electrical Certificate to help jumpstart a career in the electrical trades. This exciting certificate can be earned by participating in three Power Girls: Electrical events sponsored by NECA and will help youth join a qualifying apprenticeship program after high school.
After participating in three Power Girls: Electrical events, Girl Scouts will receive a certificate from IBEW/NECA that will be recognized by the Electrical Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (JATC) in Minneapolis and in Saint Paul. This certificate awards points on Girl Scout’s applications to the JATC apprenticeship program application, ensuring more efficient entry into the program and increased opportunities for growth and advancement.
What programs/events do Girl Scouts need to attend to earn the
certificate?
Girl Scouts must attend three events sponsored by NECA between their 6-12th grade years. These events include our Power Girl: Electrical events during the school year and our Power Girls camp during the summer.
How do I get the certificate?
Girl Scouts River Valleys tracks Girl Scout’s participation in Power Girl: Electrical programs automatically. Once your Girl Scout participates in three qualifying programs, NECA will make the certificate and it will be mailed by Girl Scouts River Valleys. Please allow 1-3 months to receive your paper certificate in the mail. Program participation in 2022 and after will qualify.
What are the benefits to the IBEW/NECA Power Girls certificate?
The certificate is worth points on an application to the Electrical Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (JATC) apprentice training programs in Saint Paul and Minneapolis. Having more points in your application ensures more efficient entry into the program, a higher likelihood of being accepted into the JATC, and opens more opportunities for advancement after joining the program.
What is the JATC? Why should I go?
To become an electrician – the first step is to become an electrical apprentice. At the Electrical Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (JATC) programs in Minneapolis and Saint Paul, participants complete classwork and on-the-job training (while getting paid!). At the end of the apprenticeship program, you will become a certified electrician. The program takes five years to complete.
Why become an electrician?
If you enjoy creative problem solving and working with your hands, being an electrician may be a great career for you! While becoming an electrician in the JATC program, apprentices take classes and work in the field at the same time – so you earn money while you go to school! Electricians are in high demand – and there’s many different areas within the electrical trade so there’s something for everyone’s unique interests. Electricians often enjoy competitive salaries and great benefits.
