Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently Asked Questions toggle arrow

Who can become a troop leader?

If you're 18 or older and passionate about helping youth build confidence and discover what's within, you can be a troop leader. Adults of any gender are welcome. No previous Girl Scout experience is required.

Do I need to have been a Girl Scout?

No! Many troop leaders were never Girl Scouts themselves. We'll provide training, ready-to-use meeting plans, and ongoing support to help you feel confident from day one.

Do I need to have a child in Girl Scouts?

No. Parents, caregivers, grandparents, relatives, neighbors, teachers, college students, and community members can all make wonderful troop leaders.

How much time does it take?

Most troops meet once or twice a month for 1–2 hours. Beyond meetings, you'll spend a little time planning activities and communicating with families. Many leaders share responsibilities with families in the troop.

Do I have to plan everything myself?

No! We provide ready-to-use meeting plans, activity guides, and year plans that make it easy to lead engaging troop meetings. You can follow them as written or customize them to fit your troop.

Can I start a troop that centers a shared identity or community?

Absolutely! We're always looking for volunteers to start troops that celebrate shared identities, cultures, or lived experiences—including BIPOC and LGBTQ+ communities. We'll help you get started and connect you with the right resources.
