Grades 4-5: Join local dancer, choreographer, and teaching artist Leanna Browne for an introduction to Umfundalai (MAH-FOON-DAH-LAH), a contemporary African dance technique, which means "essence" or "essential" in Kiswahili. We'll gain knowledge about the history of the technique, get moving with the basics of Umfundalai which draws on different parts of the African diaspora, and learn some of the core movements. No previous dance experience required. Participants will need an open space clear of obstacles and bare feet. Recommended attire includes a lapa (a piece of fabric worn as a wrap that covers the waist and hips) or shokotoes (loose fitting pants that allow for freedom of movement).
