On April 30th, 2020, Girl Scouts of River Valleys was scheduled to hold Women of Distinction, an annual fundraiser and celebration of strong women. The evening honors many amazing women who are granted the Women of Distinction award. Two Girl Scouts are also honored with the Young Women of Distinction award. Due to the COVID-19 crisis, it was looking like this event might have to be cancelled, but Girl Scouts of River Valleys didn’t give up that easily. Women of Distinction 2020 occurred as scheduled, but instead of an in-person event, it was live-streamed on Girl Scouts River Valleys’ YouTube channel!
One of the coolest things about the event itself was the fact that we were able to gather together online! As a member of Girl Scouts River Valleys' Press Corps, I had attended an earlier Women of Distinction event, and the energy of the annual celebration was perfectly captured within the live stream. The videos of each awardee created for the night were fantastic, and the virtual event held the same uplifting spirit as previous in-person events. The show was merely moved to a safer format to protect our community.
I really enjoyed how Tish and Roxane hosted the virtual event. They asked us viewers questions and we got to respond in the chat and also see what everyone else said. This interactive part of hosting the event really brought everyone watching it together, and it made the entire fundraiser even more collaborative than it had been before! I truly felt the camaraderie and Girl Scout spirit as everyone watching the livestream, including folks from around the country, cheered on those celebrated and honored their achievements.
Honestly, it’s been a little difficult to feel like I was still connected to the Girl Scout community during this challenging time. But Women of Distinction 2020 reminded me that even when we’re all spread out across the council or even across the country, we are still connected. The entire event brought me closer to Girl Scouts, raised money to support all of our amazing programs, and honored some amazing women in the process all while modeling that Girl Scouts see every problem as a chance to get creative!
Women of Distinction 2020 was a fantastic event that showed once again how resilient Girl Scouts are! Visit our Women of Distinction page to donate or watch the live event recording.
