The weather was perfect, dry and sunny, and two teams of more than 80 volunteers raked from 9 a.m. to noon.

This is our third annual Great Scout Rake Out, each year growing with more volunteers and homes. It’s a great community service event that we plan to continue for years to come.

THANKS to all the local area businesses who donated supplies and food to make this project a success. We received donations of rakes, lawn bags, free compost dumping, trailers, and food. Troop 13112 baked some delicious cookies to top it off. The group enjoyed lunch and fellowship at Sunshine Park in Andover, an end to a great day.

We made contact with more than 8,000 guests in just one day. Volunteers and staff worked at the booth for more than 12 hours to spread the word about Girl Scouting. We connected with Girl Scout alumnae and gained a lot of girl interest in joining. Of course, the No. 1 question of the day was “Where are the cookies?”

We learned a lot from the booth and will apply those lessons as we plan for future state fair participation. A great big “thank you” goes out to the girls, volunteers, and staff who came out to show their support at our first state fair showing as River Valleys.

Hello,

On behalf of Troop 53403 and the girls from WISE [Women's Initiative for Self-Empowerment], I want to give you a BIG thank you for our wonderful day at Singing Hills on July 29. Thank you especially for making accommodations in the food and scheduling for our girls who are Muslim. Although they had said they weren’t going to go swimming, they all ended up on the water trampoline and in canoes and were comfortable enough to take their head scarves off. All the girls had a great day and learned a lot about teamwork and themselves. Your staff was excellent, and everyone was very kind. Thank you so much for a memorable trip!

Warmly,

I want to thank two very thoughtful young ladies and their families from Troop 50297: Miss Anna and Miss Dana.

I underwent surgery on October 16, and Anna and Dana informed their mothers that they would like to do something for me and my family after surgery.

So the plans were underway: A wonderful meal was planned – spaghetti, salad, bread sticks, dessert (cookies and cream cake made by the girls themselves), and a wonderful breakfast bread!

They also brought a cozy blanket and magazines. And it was all arranged in a beautiful basket with seasonal gourds for decoration.

They girls stopped by one evening with a handmade card and their basket. I was amazed at the thought the girls put into this basket and their big hearts for wanting to help me out.

My surgery put me on restrictions for six weeks; the first two weeks I was not supposed to even lift a gallon of milk, so the thought of not having to plan or cook dinner was so greatly appreciated!

Girls such as Dana and Anna are a godsend!

I just wanted to recognize them for their thoughtfulness and generosity and their service to our community.

Sincerely,
Michele Kroska
