Sign up for a program this spring or summer!

Horse Camp for Troops

Come to camp with your troop for a weekend to learn all about horses. Take lessons on grooming, equipment, riding skills and more. Join in other fun camp activities, too, like archery, swimming and making s’mores.

4-Day Hug a Horse (Non-Riding)

If you don’t have horse or riding experience, this program would be great for you! Spend time petting, grooming and learning about riding these awesome creatures.

6-Day Riding Connections

Learn at your own pace with this program. On the first day, you’ll take a short riding assessment and will then be matched with a riding level. Explore barn safety, horse care, tack and equipment, grooming and riding. You’ll receive a minimum of three hours of horse time each day.

13-Day Riding Connections

If you just can’t get enough horses, sign up for this program! You’ll spend 13 days learning about and taking care of horses. During your stay at Camp Northwoods, you’ll get at least one half-to full-day trail ride.

Space is limited. Learn more and sign up today!

On Saturday, October 10, the Campus Girl Scouts from the University of Wisconsin- River Falls, held a workshop to help girls earn their Horse Lover Badge. A morning session for Girl Scout Brownies (and a few Girl Scout Daisies, too) focused on horse care, breed identification, and even a new twist on the song “Head, Shoulders, Knees, and Toes.”

The afternoon session also focused on skill for the older girls, Girl Scout Juniors and Cadettes. They also learned care of the horse, parts of the saddle, and more. At one of the stations the girls learned how to saddle a horse. Not having enough horses for all, they practiced with pony saddles, using each other as the ponies.
.
All the girls spent some time riding on “Shrek” the horse.
.
The Campus Girl Scouts planned and carried out all the activities, with the help of the Block and Bridle club.

For the last four years I have taken a troop of girls to summer camp. The first two years we ...more Troop Camping

For the last four years I have taken a troop of girls to summer camp. The first two years we went to Camp Lakamaga. Then we were ready for a little more adventure, so last summer and this summer we headed to Camp Northwoods for five days and four nights.

Camp Northwoods is about a three- to four-hour drive from the Twin Cities, but well worth the extra gas and time.

Taking a troop to summer camp is very easy to do. We pick the days we want to go, decide if we want to stay in the troop house, cabins, or tents (we always stay in the tents), and select our activities. We tell the camp staff what we want to do each day, and the camp will provide the staff needed.

We decide what meals we want to eat in the lodge and what meals we want to make in our unit. (We usually do about half in the lodge and half in the unit. We always have breakfast in our unit since it is an easy meal to do and usually allows us to have a more relaxed morning. And we have supper in the lodge when we are tired at the end of the day.)

Going to camp as a troop is quite economical. The planning is very minimal. (We usually work on one or two badges and bring a craft to do in our unit.) The camp staff are so welcoming and helpful. Anytime we need anything, they are always willing to go the extra mile to make sure we get what we need.

I would highly recommend any troop leader to take their girls to Girl Scout camp. Your troop gets to enjoy a summer camp experience, and you get wonderful help from the camp staff. Our troop was already planning our return trip to Northwoods next summer on our drive home last summer. Their request: more horseback riding!
