Last month, five Girl Scout troops from the Indian Heights service unit marched in the Mendota Days Parade. The parade is part of the Mendota Days celebration held in mid-July each year. The Girl Scouts walk in the parade every year and have a lot of fun.

Girl Scout Daisies and sisters Samantha and Allison, wearing official Girl Scout gear, smiled for a photo after marching in the parade. It turned out to be a bright and warm summer day—a great day for a parade and a great way for Girl Scouts to discover and connect in their community.

The Pine Island Kindergarten Daisy Troop 25596 gathered at Crosswinds Church in Oronoco to stuff backpacks for Food For Friends. Food For Friends is a collaboration between Pine Island School and non-profit organizations (including Crosswinds Church) to provide a backpack full of food on Fridays to Pine Island students in need. This ensures adequate nutrition over the weekend for local families who most need it. The program currently serves children from kindergarten to 4th grade.

This Daisy troop’s goal was to add a box of Girl Scout cookies to each backpack. These cookies were donated by regular customers as part of Cookies for the Community. In this program troops make a donation of Girl Scout cookies from their troop inventory to a worthy organization right in their community. The troop will select an organization such as a local food shelf, shelter, care center, hospital or other organization. River Valleys Girl Scouts encourages troops to learn about the organization where the donation will be made to truly provide the girls with a full community service experience.

The Kindergarten Daisy Troop decided to support Food For Friends as their troop choice for Cookies for the Community. There are around 50 children at Pine Island School receiving weekly backpacks in the Food for Friends program.

Troop co-leaders, Becky Ziller and Ivana Micallef-Johnston, along with our Daisy Girl Scouts and Daisy parents helped to stuff backpacks. This shows our girls how to give back to the community and how to make the world a better place, which is part of the Girl Scout law.

We had a great meeting this past Monday night. Our 10 Girl Scout Daisies in Troop 13601 put together 17 boxes of gifts for Operation Christmas Child. We are so proud to see them give to a child they most likely will never even see. What a gift to learn to give. We are very fortunate to have received a large donation of small items to fill the boxes from Scholastic Book Fairs and to have the pleasure of working with Grace Fellowship Church. Tracy and I are so proud of our girls!

Last month, Girl Scout Daisy through Cadette troops in Faribault participated in the 25th Annual Airfest and Balloon Rally, a community-wide event at the Faribault Airport. Troops signed up for one-hour time slots to work at the Girl Scout booth. The girls helped children and passersby make various styles of paper aircraft and parachutes. Leaders were present to assist as needed.

There was also a Girl Scout information display set up where the general public could stop in and ask questions about Girl Scouting in Faribault (or River Valleys in general). This was a wonderful opportunity for the girls to learn and practice leadership and public relations skills.

Faribault’s service unit also invited Miss Washington County, Mary Swenson, to partake in the festivities, and the girls loved her. She mingled with the Girl Scouts and the audience, worked with the girls in the activities booth, was a featured guest speaker, appeared on stage and shared her platform (self-esteem building through the uniquely ME! program), participated in numerous photo opportunities, gave autographs, etc.

The Girl Scouts also packed up bags filled with goodies and coupons (including Girl Scout brochures/bookmarks) and passed them out to passersby.
