In order to make the troop planning process as easy as possible, River Valleys replaced Program Essentials with Planning Guides this year. The online, interactive guides help you customize your year as your girls become well-rounded leaders through Journey awards, badges and patches.

Each skill-building area offers a variety of ways to engage in learning and earning, from completing activity plans to attending special badge-earning events. Using your grade level’s online Planning Guide is the easiest and most efficient way to ensure your troop has a successful year. Each award includes links to activity plans, events, the Girl Scout Shop and other supporting resources.

While the Planning Guides make planning simpler, they still include the wide variety of activities and awards available through Girl Scouts. In order to help each girl make the most of her experience, we expect all River Valleys’ troops to use the Planning Guides to carry out their activities this year.

Check back in early 2013 for a new way to report on activities and earn pins.

You’re the Expert!

Do you have ideas for activities girls can do as they work towards badges and Journey awards? We invite you to submit your ideas using our online form or template.

Note: The print version of the Girl Scout Junior Planning Guide includes incorrect images of the Journey awards and the Bridging to Girl Scout Cadettes badge. The online images are accurate.

Jane’s garden is in Prior Lake. It was absolutely beautiful. Jane gave her talk so that it included all the information for Girl Scout Brownies and Juniors to earn a badge and for Cadette and above to be well on their way to an interest patch. Admission to the event was a donation of school supplies to be used at the Girl Scouts box packing party in October or early November.

Kristine DCamp, leader of Troop 21594 had 4 girls from her troop. Luanne Anderson leader of Troops 10519 – 2 girls; 10651 – 3 girls; and 11202 – 2 girls.
Jane, the master gardener, was a girl scout herself. She wore her Girl Scout pins from when she was a girl. The girls that attended thought it was really great that she still had her pins and so proudly wore them.

Geocaching is modern-day treasure hunting. Geocaching websites list caches, their latitudes and longitudes, and hints to the location of a cache. A cache is some sort of waterproof container, hidden in an outdoor location, on public land. Over 30 caches are hidden in and around Austin, Minn., with thousands more throughout the state.

All you need for geocaching is a hand-held GPS, Internet access, and a desire to look around outdoors. The GPS gets you within 20-30 feet of the cache. The clues and your ability to find things do the rest.

For more great pictures of Troop 40044′s geocaching adventure, view the photo album on River Valleys’ Facebook fan page.
