My experience as a Day Camp Caddie
by Girl Scout Lauren
My name is Lauren, and I am 13 years old. I have been a Girl Scout since kindergarten and have gone to camp since first grade. Day camp has always been the main highlight of my summer. I love being away from home, singing camp songs, and making new friends.
When I was younger, I would look up to the counselors and older girls and wish that I could, someday, become one of them. They were so awesome. They seemed to know how to lead everyone in everything – they could do all the crafts and knew all the words to all of the songs. They looked like they were having a lot of fun.
Last summer, just as I finished sixth grade, I got my wish and became a Caddie for my service unit’s day camp. It was almost everything I hoped it would be. I met a lot of new friends, and I learned how to lead games and do the crafts. I even got to help make “Chicken in the Woods” (a lunch specialty).
One of the most fun experiences that I had last year as a Caddie was the annual Caddie overnight. We eat pizza and ice cream and go into town for a movie. I found that the concrete floor was more comfortable than the “mattresses.” I can’t wait for this year!
Being a Caddie has helped in me grow in ways both inside and outside of Girl Scouts. As a Caddie, we were expected to work with the girls on projects from start to finish – both planning and doing the project. I am working towards my Girl Scout Silver Award this year, and the Caddie experience has taught me how to plan a project and see it through to the end. I am much more able to figure out and focus on a project than I would have been had it not been for Girl Scouts.
I have also learned a lot about being a leader – when to step up and take charge, and when to just DO – and lead by example. I’ve loved being a Caddie and am really looking forward to this summer when I will be a Caddie II. I would encourage you to be a Caddie – you’ll learn a lot and meet a lot of fun people. See you at camp!
Preparing for the destination... (Part 2)
by Girl Scout Amanda
Continued from "Applying for a destination" in The Edge - March 2009
After I got the e-mail that said I was accepted to Costa Rica, I had to start preparing right away. I started raising money for the trip. For example: I had a garage sale in the Blaine Garage Sale weekend.
Also for the trip, I need to start getting certain clothing and gear, and I need to find those items and get that ready. In addition to that there are a few other expenses, like a passport and my transportation to and from Costa Rica. Not only do I need to raise money for the trip, but for a train too.
The atmosphere is very different in Costa Rica, and I'm not used to it. If I went to Costa Rica without training I wouldn’t last very long, so I have to run and build up my strength to help prepare me for my trip to Costa Rica.

Green Challenge
Water conservation, how can you help?
http://www.gardeners.com/Build-a-Rain-Garden/5712,default,pg.html
Natural beauty…rain gardens
A rain garden is a special type of garden, designed to collect storm water runoff from a roof, driveway, or other surfaces. Rather than rushing into a storm sewer or a local waterway, the rainwater collects in a shallow depression in your yard. This area is planted with native grasses and wildflowers that are specially selected for their ability to gradually absorb and filter storm water.
Rain gardens can have a significant impact on the water quality in our communities. Studies have shown that as much as 70 percent of the pollution in streams, rivers, and lakes has been carried there by storm water. By taking responsibility for the rainwater that falls on your own roof and driveway, you'll be helping to protect our rivers, streams, and lakes from storm water pollution. Adding a rain garden to your yard will also provide food and shelter for wildlife, and give you a whole new garden that's hardy, low maintenance and naturally beautiful! s
To learn how to build your own rain garden, download the PDF.
Rain Barrels
Rain barrels capture and store rainwater from house gutters and downspouts. Instead of allowing the runoff to drain into municipal storm sewers, you can use the collected rain water in your garden. Unlike well or city water, rain water is untreated and does not contain fluoride, chlorine, minerals, and other chemicals. However, if you want to use rain barrel water as drinking water, you'll have to invest in a water purification system.
To learn how to build your own rain barrel for about $30, download the PDF.

Leadership opportunities
Calling all girls: Help us show the power YOU have to make a difference!
Every day girls act as agents of change: protecting the environment, contributing to their communities, and engineering innovative solutions to solve problems. When girls choose to make a difference, amazing things can happen!
SciGirls, a new science show on PBS, will showcase real girls using science to tackle some extraordinary projects. We’ll tell the stories of friends engineering an eco-friendly tree house, designing robotic theater sets, creating a rain garden, or discovering the science behind their favorite sport.
But we want SciGirls to be more than just a TV show. We want it to be a movement. SciGirls will seed a nationwide network, linking and harnessing the power of girls to make a difference using science. For that to happen, we need your help!
Girls, this show is for you, so tell us what matters in your life. Tell us what empowers and inspires you. Tell us what you want to see on a television show celebrating girls as scientists of the future.
Suggest ideas for projects, girl groups, or mentors to feature on SciGirls at www.scigirls.org. Help us show how smart girls are changing the world!
Be a role model
Be a role model to younger girls. Share your unique skills and talents. Volunteer for Girl Scouts.
River Valleys’ program department is continually looking for older Girl Scouts and adult volunteers to assist with council-sponsored program events and other activities. If you’re interested in volunteering for programs in any capacity, please contact Program Specialist Nicole Huebner at nicole.huebner@girlscoutsrv.org to see where your help is desired and much appreciated!

empowerME@school: Mobilizing Students to Lead
New from the Alliance for a Healthier Generation, empowerME@school is a free student leadership toolkit for middle and high school students to successfully improve the nutritional quality of the snacks and drinks in their schools. Many schools are making positive changes in the drinks and snacks sold to students, but it can be a struggle. Because students are most affected by these changes, engaging them is especially important. In fact, schools that report the most success in making changes to their snack and drink offerings identify student engagement as critical. Thus, the alliance developed empowerME@school to equip students with tools to mobilize for change.
By participating in empowerME@school, students learn advocacy skills including surveying their peers, developing action plans, public speaking, working with adults and mentors, evaluating group efforts, and celebrating victories. Interested youth and adult allies may download empowerME@school and a facilitator's guide at http://empowerme2b.org/.
Imagine If... Story Contest
Deadline: June 5
The Shirley Ann Sullivan Educational Foundation is working to raise awareness of the United Nation's Millennium Development Goals and global poverty. The hope is the stories written for this contest will bring new ideas and solutions inspiring others to take action. In 1,500 words or less, students are asked to imagine not having enough to eat or imagine going to work to support their family at the age of eight.
What if they never had the chance to learn to read? Imagine life without running water or education as it reflects on the United Nations eight Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). In the same way, students should "imagine if........" these issues no longer troubled our world.
Stories will be judged according to creativity, quality of writing, and the extent to which they promote awareness of one or more of the MDGs. http://sasef.org.dnstemplate.com/pdf/gysdimagineifwebpage09.pdf

We would like to invite your troop or family to volunteer for a three-hour shift on Girl Scout Day at “Little Farm Hands” on Saturday, September 5 and Sunday, September 6. Before or after the short three-hour shift, you are able to enjoy the State Fair for FREE! Also, each volunteer will receive a “Little Farm Hands” T-shirt as a token of appreciation.
To sign up for a shift, contact Bertrene Cage at 763-971-4046 or Bertrene.cage@girlscoutsrv.org. This volunteer opportunity is recommended for ages 9 and up. Preference given to first-time volunteers.
