Centennial Day of Service

Girl Scouts atop a CDOS leaf pile

We Did It!

On October 13, 2012, over 25,000 River Valleys’ Girl Scouts gave a total of 62,500 service hours to protect our local waterways from excessive and harmful algae growth.

A special thank you to the volunteer coordinators, who donated more than 20,000 hours over the course of 12 months.

2012 Take Action Project

Leaves + water = algae = dead fish

Girl Scouts took action by:

  • Raking thousands of bags of leaves and debris, which kept phosphorus from entering lakes and streams
  • Marking storm drains throughout our council with messages about keeping drains clear of pollutants like grass and leaves
  • Distributing 50,000 educational door hangers to their community members

These actions keep our water safe and clean by preventing 10 million pounds of algae growth.
