The Pine Island Girl Scouts Troop 25596 was awarded a “Star of the North” Congressional Award on February 13 by Congressman John Kline for their support of the Food for Friends program. Recipients of the award are recognized for “extraordinary acts of service and random acts of kindness performed by Minnesotans in the 2nd District.”

As Girl Scout Daisies in 2011, they participated in the Girl Scouts Cookies for Community program and chose Food for Friends as their organization. The program, a collaboration between Pine Island Schools and Crosswinds Church, provides a backpack of food to 60 Pine Island K-5 students to ensure adequate nutrition over the weekend.

Each year since, the troop has increased their participation; they stuff the backpacks (adding cookies of course!), encourage customers to donate, and this year used funds they earned to sponsor a week’s worth of food.

We applaud the Pine Island Girl Scouts for their commitment to making the world a better place!
