Xcel Opens Its Monticello Plant to Girl Scouts

Posted by

Girl Scouts at Monticello PlantDo you know how fission helps a boiling water reactor make electricity, or are you familiar with the structure of an atom? More than 80 Girl Scout Juniors can now say, “yes” to those questions after a day of science learning at Monticello Nuclear Generating Plant.

Two of Xcel Energy’s employee network groups—Women in Nuclear and Women’s Information Link—hosted the event. Women in Nuclear is a global organization focusing on careers in the nuclear industry; Women’s Information Link is a group focused on developing and bringing women into engineering, operations and maintenance careers.

The girls were eager to get their hands dirty and learn about the nuclear generating plant, and Xcel Energy volunteers were on hand to answer the girls’ questions.
